The Challenge:

To design a multipurpose facility to replace the small building the centre had been using. The new design must respond to the needs of the diverse local community and enable the Trust to continue and enhance the services they provide.

Designed by DGSE architects, the facility offers a range of spaces including consultation rooms, breakout areas, hireable meeting rooms, a large hall, and a community kitchen, all designed for flexible use. For such a versatile space, ensuring sound is contained within each defined area was a vital part of the project’s success. Working closely with the architects, the project team proposed acoustic materials and ceiling options that would control reverberation and absorb sound reflections from hard polished concrete floors and large glazed areas. To achieve this, the spaces required a cohesive sound-absorbing solution that could perform well across all areas to provide a warm welcoming and comfortable space.

  • Manage sound reflections and control reverberation times.
  • Create a visual interest to the ceiling aesthetic.
  • Meet sustainable design intent of the architect's vision.

The Solution:

To create a welcoming decor, control reverberation and speech privacy between offices and to minimise rain noise from under the metal roof, Asona Triton Duo 60™ mass loaded acoustic ceiling tiles with Sonaris random slot perforated facing (white over grey) was selected in the general public areas. In the food preparation spaces the Triton Duo 60 ceiling panels were finished with a Hygiene facing and all panels sat within a Rondo Donn DX grid seismic system.

The end result was a series of acoustically controlled spaces that allowed for good speech privacy, felt calm and created an environment that is both pleasant and workable for this multi- functional facility.

The Merivale project stands out as a clear example of what can be achieved. Asona’s Triton Duo 60™ ceiling tiles are a smart choice that not only solved reverberation & rain attenuation problems but also manages speech privacy from one area to another. These panels deliver an impressive NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) of 1.0.

Merivale Community Centre has also been shortlisted for the Waikato & Bay of Plenty Architecture Awards in the Community category.

  • Control of reverberation and speech privacy between the different spaces.
  • Attenuation of rain noise.
  • Decorative facings to add to over-all design asthetic.
  • Hygiene facing for kitchen & consultation rooms.
  • NRC of 1.0 achieved.
